This mighty Wolfsburg (Germany) firm has famously brought us products steeped in legacy for several decades. Stalwart monikers such as the VW Beetle, the VW Polo and VW Golf hatchbacks, larger metal such as the Jetta and Passat saloons, plus the versatile people movers from the compact MPVs such as the Caddy to monolithic Caravelle. Then they do rugged rather well too in the form of popular SUVs and bakkies from the Tiguan right up to the Amarok via the Touareg and more.

South Africans loves them for their good value, excellent resale prospects but most of all for their understated style. As far as Teutonic brands go, VW have managed to maintain their price position well beneath the luxury marque’s whilst still offering comparable levels of sophistication. They feature an ever evolving model range, just look at the new Arteon hatch-cum-saloon car that replaces the Passat CC and now challenges its posher cousin, the Audi A5. That’s called punching above your weight.

Likes: Styling, resale value, breadth of talent including some quite fiery performers too.

Dislikes: Well, we guess you could consider some of them a bit boring, then there’s the ‘premium’ out of warranty maintenance costs.
