The number one motoring brand remains unapologetically Japanese. That means practicality and reliability come standard, and there's more, but if you're a South African then two words will spring to the fore each time – Toyota Hilux and Toyota Corolla – the two-pronged attack that has captured the purchasing power of buyers for four decades. Both cars lead their respective segments, both are steeped in legacy and both enjoy an enduring (and massive) following.

They're not alone of course, with the Yaris providing a strong and stalwart contender in the compact hatch segment, the new C-HR battling convincingly in the important compact SUV end of the spectrum whilst the new Fortuner does the same at the higher end. The 86 is a perennial favourite for performance enthusiasts but will no longer need to fight alone as it is soon to be joined by a familiar nameplate thanks to the return of the Supra in 2019. Also in the future, you can expect a new line of Corollas in sedan and hatch (essentially replacing the Auris) derivatives. An exciting time for Toyota.

Likes: Excellent resale value and great after-sales.

Dislikes: 'Toyota styling' is somewhat of an oxymoron. This might change in future.
