Sorry if that sounds harsh but the days of the Kadett and Monza are long gone. Even with the first few Astra models, General Motors’ Opel was a formidable prospect, matching in driving enjoyment and performance like for like with the Golfs (including the GTI) of its time. Today, minus its relationship with the General, the American firm which itself struggles to maintain its relevance and indeed financial good-standing, Opel now enjoys relations with Peugeot.

Our production has moved to Namibia where they churn forth the Grandland X SUV. It isn’t the only SUV in the stable, there is also the imported Crossland X and Mokka SUVs, since gravel-travel continues to be a staple form of transport in South Africa. So while we still have the Opel Corsa, we miss the half-tonner bakkie that was once built from it. Yet it is good to know that from its embers there are still great Opel cars on sale in Mzansi, and that you can still own an Astra but now also the Adam supermini which again, is the kind of car people want in 2018.

Likes: Opel make handsome cars, always have.

Dislikes: We miss the grand old days of Opel, but this will do just fine.
