“Mazda has never had a better range of cars.”

This Japanese brand has a long history with South Africa. It was affordable motoring for the people and provided the local market with a reliable motoring alternative at a cheaper price tag to the European cars that were available on the market. The Mazda Wankel engine especially will always hold a special place in our hearts. This rotary unit was designed in the 1960s by Felix Wankel and are loved for being small, powerful and easily tune-able. Perhaps the most popular use of the rotary unit was in Mazda’s formidable and much-loved RX-7 series of sports cars.

While the rotary engine is no longer available in passenger cars, Mazda remains a strong brand and one that most certainly deserves some attention. The modern Kodo design language makes any Mazda easily recognisable with sharp lines and distinguishing features. The line-up consists of a number of family-oriented options such as the Mazda3, CX-3 and CX-5, but there’s also the BT-50 for those wanting a bakkie, and the MX-5 for those wanting something a bit sportier. Also, Mazda’s use of SkyActiv technology - technology that helps with fuel consumption and engine output - highlights that the company is striving to be more efficient while still offering its customers a good amount driving pleasure.

Dislikes: No rotary engine option. For now.
