Aah GWM, I don’t think you have any idea how many of these cars exist on our roads – I mean the sheer size of its portfolio in SA. Sure, there’s the Steed range of Steed double and Steed single cab bakkies, you might also remember the Hover and the Florid – most people do. But do you remember the optimistically named M2? Or the C10 (Toyota Yaris clone), C20R (Yaris on stilts and rubber), the C50T sedan, H5 SUV or H6 – a compact SUV you’ll now find with the Haval badge on its prow?

What this means is that there is a multitude of cars to choose from both old or new and they’re pretty good – not bad for a company that only started producing sedans in 2010. GWM will continue to be a brand to watch, with luxury offshoots such as WEY and even a partnership with BMW on electric Minis to be built for China. If we were forced to recommend or even buy a Chinese car, it would almost certainly have a GWM badge on it.

Likes: GWM is desperately at the leading edge of passenger car production in China and it shows in the cars that make it to our shores.

Dislikes: They’ve really caught up – all that’s left is to refine those power trains.
