In SA, we think of small cars as cheap, budget-friendly entry points to car ownership, but in Europe they're simply small cars. A car that is small, and therefore perfect for packed city streets. This is that, a stylish and youthful steer that under promised and over delivered. Calvin Fisher has driven it at the launch and liked it very much.

Calvin Fisher has driven the new Peugeot 5008 available with either 121kW/240Nm if you opt for the 1.6l turbopetrol, or with 110kW/370Nm if you prefer the 2.0l turbodiesel. Both available in Allure and flagship GT Line trim levels and all for under R600,000. Does it live up to the "Refined, safe, innovative cars that are engaging to drive" promise?

200 years of first producing scooters, bicycles, pepper mills, coffee grinders and such - that's Peugeot. And it was 117 years ago when the brand arrived in Cape Town to market its first car. Peugeot and the PSA Group have relaunched in South Africa, and they say are, “back in the race.” Have they've got the right products to challenge the leaders?

Having already sampled the regular 3008 last year, and loved it, Calvin Fisher jumped at the chance to drive it again, this time in GT Line trim. Has this competent, comfortable family crossover been ruined by the addition of sporty ‘GT Line’ addendum or is it still deserving of accolades such as Euro Car of the Year? Our esteemed editor finds out.

Full disclosure: Calvin Fisher is fan of the 308. Selling on average only ten per month in recent times, there is little wonder why it vanished entirely from South African for over a year. But, if you’re willing to overlook some of the, perhaps unfair, traditional French product cynicism, there is value and fun to be had in the Peugeot 308.

At R459,900 the Peugeot 3008 1.6T Allure is an extremely competitive package, with very few cons leading us to question; is it worth the risk? We say yes. Sure, there are better cars, but there might not be a better ‘unashamedly French family car’, and after a full week of driving it that’s a category that suddenly appeals to us now.

There's much to enamour you with the Peugeot 208 GT Line. At R259,000 we’d even accuse it of being reasonable, with plenty of kit, and of course, Peugeot’s 3 year/100 000km warranty and 45 000km service plan to further sweeten the deal. It feels like the perfect alternative to the econobox stalwarts, which alone is worth the price of admission.

Meet the perky little Peugeot 208 that sits at just under R260,000 but offers percolating performance you'd associate with something a fair bit dearer. So far, we’re impressed after a brief first drive, and be sure check back next week after our full evaluation of what is a great pocket rocket.

With the 308 there is the question of resale value which will traditionally be well below the competition. However, with the 308s standard maintenance and service plan playing to its advantage and Parisian good looks, if you're in the market for a Golf size hatchback, the new 308 fully deserves more of your attention.
